Other Flash Publications

Here we have a list our favourite flash fiction publications. Some are exclusively online publications, some aren’t. Some pay you to submit stories, some don’t. Some ask for specific styles of fiction, some couldn’t care less. We suggest you take a peek at some and be astounded by the literary brilliance of flash fiction writing.

AntipodeanSF
An Australian online publication,  AntipodeanSF is devoted to flash science/speculative fiction stories.

Aurealis – Australian Fantasy and Science Fiction
Aurealis is a well known and well-respected SF/fantasy magazine that publishes science fiction, fantasy, and horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words.

Australian Horror Writers Association
The Australian Horror Writers Association are currently holding a Flash and Short Story Competition. They are looking exclusively for dark fiction.

Brevity
Something a little different: non-fiction flash! Have a read of their past issues – some of that stuff is gold.

Flash Fiction Online
Accepts flash fiction submissions and publishes stories monthly. Has a large collection of stories and provides very handy flash writing tips.

Flashquake
“Flashquake is a paying online journal, dedicated to publishing the best of flash literature.”

FlashSpec
An Australian online publication. Sadly closed for submissions currently but keep an eye on the space throughout the year. These guys publish very good speculative flash fiction.

From The Asylum
An alright online publication of flash fiction, short stories and poetry. These guys like speculative, quirky stuff. Click on their Anthology and Submission Guideline links.

PostSecret
Although not technically flash fiction this website provides wonderful examples of concise yet powerful storytelling, as anonymous contributors reveal their secrets in just a few short words on the back of a postcard.

Smokelong
Another decent publication which publishes flash fiction quarterly.

Two Sentence Stories
An online contest inviting people to submit two-sentence stories. Awesome cash prizes!

Vestal Review
Vestal Review is a quarterly e-zine and annual print magazine devoted to flash fiction. Since they receive hundreds of submissions every year they can be awfully selective with what they publish. But give them a go anyway.

Word Riot
A decent website which publishes up and coming writers. Accepts flash fiction, short stories, non fiction and poetry.
